Protecting your Family from Head Lice

The first thing you can do to help protect your family from head lice is to discuss the subject openly. Lice are nothing to be ashamed of! They can affect anyone, regardless of background or hygiene. And if everyone knows what's going on, the risk is cut back by half.

If there is a head lice breakout in school, follow this advice:

Consider using a hair care product that repels lice, such as Lice Shield Shampoo & Conditioner in 1 or Lice Shield Leave In Spray. Lice Shield products are gentle enough for everyday use and suitable for the entire family.

If a family member is infested, treat the person straight away with anti-lice agents (pediculicides) to eliminate the lice. Ask your school nurse or pharmacist to recommend the best product. Some pediculicide treatments need to be repeated after 7 to 10 days to ensure that all lice are eliminated.

Immediately inform everyone in direct contact (preschool, school, friends and family) so that they can take the appropriate measures, such as not sharing clothing, head gear, bedding and towels. Lice are nothing to be ashamed of! Talk about them!

Avoid close body contact during the treatment to avoid the head lice transferring from head to head.

Check everyone who's had close contact with the infested person with a nit comb for nits and lice. If you find infestation, treat them too.

Wash all bedding and clothes at 140°F. Non-washable items or textiles (e.g., cuddly toys) can be stored in the freezer for at least 1 day to kill lice and nits.
